Unleashing the Dragon Within: A Poem of Self-Discovery

I’ve always wanted to slay dragons.
To hold my sword high and mighty, as I slash away at their wings and block their fire with my shield.
To find satisfaction in being someone’s hero.
I wanted to bathe in dragon blood as Sigurd did when he slayed Fafnir.
To become invincible and never fear another enemy.
I’ve always wanted to slay dragons,
But what if those dragons reside in me?
The beasts of pain, distrust and abandonment.
What if the dragons I seek to slay are the manifestations of what I simply cannot forgive?
What if the blood I wish to bathe in, is the blood of someone desperate for protection?
I used to want to slay dragons.
I have now laid down my sword and shield, and under my armor i discovered wings.
Mighty wings to fly as high as I can dream,
And a gut full of dragon flame burning with passion.
I am the dragon, and I will not be slain.
This is by far one of my favorite poems I have ever written. Dragons have so much symbolism and history within the fantasy world and I have always found them so profound. When thinking about self discovery and the journey we all go on as we find ourselves in this world, we all tend to face our own trials. Traditionally those could be portrayed as outward obstacles. Whether it be family issues, relationships, career and education; but what about those obstacles we face inward? What if they demons we need to slay most lie within ourselves? I recently started changing my mind set to focus on the things I can control within myself instead of trying to control the people and things around me. It has helped me in coming to terms with a lot of trauma throughout my life and learn to let it go. It no longer has the hold on me it did before.
Anyways, let me know what you think of this poem. I have more laying around I plan to keep sharing!
